Chengdu - Capital of Sichuan Province in China
- Chengdu is located in the fertile plains of China's Sichuan province. Due to its agricultural wealth Chengdu is sometimes called "Land of Milk and Honey". The Fulan river bisects the city although boat traffic, common until the 1960's, has all but disappeared. The greater city area is divided into five districts and 12 counties, altogether home to 9.2 million people.
- Chengdu City, the capital of Sichuan, is both the cultural and industrial center of the massive agricultural plain of southwest China. The history of Chengdu spans more than 2000 years and the city is lettered with historical and cultural relics and is famed also for its satins and brocades. It's an attractive city, long known as the Gateway to Tibet, and essentially comprises the foothills of the Himalayas stretching all the way East this far. The food is excellent, fiery Sichuan chillis predominate and that tingling sensation around the lips is as good a reason as any to visit.
- More culturally, the beautiful carvings of the Wenshu Monastery are well worth a visit, on Renmin Zhonglu, and is the main focal point for the Zen sect in Sichuan. An antique market runs along Renmin Nanlu, with some interesting pieces still around, while the downtown night market is alos worth a visit. There are some great Chinese restaurants here too, The Yaohua on Chunxi Lu was once visited by Chairman Mao, while hot pot heaven is located around Yangshi Jie. Chengdu is rightly famous also for it's traditional tea houses, ba bao cha' (eight treasure tea) is served in long spouted bronze kettles and expertly poured as the waiter stands some six feet away from your table. Teahouses also provide opera, story-telling and other musical performances, often advertised so easy to spot.
- Pandas are another must, but you'll need to travel, the Giant Panda Breeding Research Centre is some 12km out of Chengdu, you'll need to arrive early in the morning though for any chance to view them.
