Chongqing - Mountain City in China
- Chongqing , also spelled Chungking, is one of the most famous cities in China and capital of a provincial "muncipality" by the same name. Chongqing city is the launching point for boat trips down the Yangtze River through the Three Gorges Dam. Two hours west of the city in Chongqing municipality are located the spectacular Buddhist Dazu Rock Carvings.
- Chongqing is one of four municipalities in China, large cities that are not part of a province but report directly to the national government; it is the only one not on the east coast.
- Neighbours: Hubei (east), Hunan (east), Guizhou (south), Sichuan (west), Shaanxi (north)
- Located on the edge of the Yungui Plateau, Chongqing is intersected by the Jialing River and the upper reaches of the Yangtze. It contains Daba Shan in the north, Wu Shan in the east, Wuling Shan in the southeast, and Dalou Mountain to the south.
- Chongqing is a city of some 13 million and was designated a municipality, bringing it under the direct control of Beijing in 1997. Nonetheless, it is still very much a Sichuanese city and should continue to be regarded as such. Located in a rugged valley, and bisected by the Yangtze and Rivers, it has for centuries been a vital and strategically important city for trade and distribution into and out of China's heartland.
- Summers are very hot and wet - and winters cool and chilly, so be prepared for this. Chongqing has undergone dramatic development over the past few years, with high rise tower blocks, and massive infrastructure development underway to seal its position as a regional distribution and logistics hub, with massive investment in air, rail, highway and shipping facilities.
- Chongqing is a city of hills, with many old lanes and buildings worth exploring, cruises up the Yangtze, and a walk around to the Port all worth a half day wander. There is even a cable car ride across the river. Air quality is grim however, and clear days are rare. However, there are cultural spots to visit at the Dazu Stone Carvings, and the Jinro and Simian Mountains amongst others. Your Hotel will be able to arrange guides or tours for you, or ask your local contact for some time to see these.
- Food wise, local cuisine is spicy, but excellent, for those with a more delicate disposition then as mentioned, the hotels will cater for this. McDonalds and KFC are in town, but no Starbucks and other major brands have penetrated this far as et although it will only be a matter of time. Chongqing is a safe city to walk around, but very busy with masses of people, so take normal precautions, a local guide book and a phrase book if you do not speak Mandarin and you will be fine. Finally, back to the food - Sichuan cuisine is one of China's best so dig in, have a try - and make sure you have a beer ready before you order!
